This is more of a promotion than a review. Just needed to put on everyone’s radar the album “The Medicine” by John Mark McMillan. The Medicine is a must own, and a start to finish incredible album. I honestly haven’t listened to much else in about a month. My biggest beef with most mainstream “Christian” music, and modern worship music, is that lyrically, they are more often than not cliche and trite. Honestly, how many more ways can we sing the words “all my praise” and “you are worthy.” I just feel like the poetic element we are experiencing in church music is lacking. It certainly isn’t when you read the Psalms, and it certainly isn’t on the album. McMillan obviously puts tons of thought and heart into his lyrics. Musically, a lot of mainstream worship is repetitive, predictable, and uninspiring. The medicine is anything but boring, redundant, and cliche. This guy can flat out write a song. For whatever reason he seemingly has found a way to write heartfelt “worship songs” (I use that term loosely here) without falling into the same old patterns and templates that so many modern worship writers fall into. The album is totally fresh, totally original as it pertains to writing modern worship music, and has refreshed, excited and inspired me consistently when I listen to it. There are several songs on the album that I will be inserting into the KVWC regular rotation. Go pick it up. The Medicine. John Mark McMillan.
