Well, in a nutshell, I thought Sunday was amazing. Everything from the music to the sermon seemed to flow seamlessly. Not that a “smooth” service is the ultimate goal, but it sure is nice when it happens. The band was especially amped and excited to be leading Sunday, which was a nice shift from the last time we played, which just felt a bit lacklustre.
For one, we had an old friend jump in with us on keys (Chris Stephens). Chris and some of the guys go way back, so it was really special to be able to have him on board, not to mention what he brought to the table on a musical level. Another exciting thing about Sunday was that we tried to play with live loops for the first time ever. It was a bit of a learning curve, but overall I think they worked really well, really adding an extra presence to the songs that had them. I was a bit nervous going in that we would lose the click, or forget what comes next in the song, but we pulled it off. It was really fun, and I think it added to the overall worship experience for many people, even if they couldn’t put their finger on what exactly was different. Which to me, THAT is good worship leading. When we as worship leaders can implement something strategically, to somehow enhance the worship time, WITHOUT it becoming a thing, or without everyone’s attention and focus moving to whatever was implemented, I think that is crucial. A lot of the time we shoot ourselves in the foot adding something to the worship time because people become focused or fixated on that thing, and not Jesus. Adding the loops this week reminded me of how important it is to be subtle in our direction and leadership, and to in all things, point to Jesus, avoiding focus or attention on ourselves.
SO, overall, I thought Sunday was awesome, thought the band had an “ON” day, and that things were really clicking. I am pumped about looping and plan to use them frequently from here on out.
